“I thought the Young Investigator
Meeting was very inspiring in many ways. The Estuary Resort was a
splendid location. The quality of the science, both the talks and
posters, was outstanding. The enthusiasm and optimism among the Indian
scientists, at all levels, was wonderful to see. I had the sense
throughout the meeting that things are rapidly improving in Indian
science and that they will continue to do so in the near future.

“If a foundation of strong and quality
life science research is to be build in India many things need to
change.  Examples of excellence at the individual level are few and we
need to have many. Examples of excellence at the institutional level are
fewer and we need to have at least a few very soon. The recent
injection of huge resources into advanced research and the burgeoning
number of new institutions are an opportunity made of quick- setting
cement.

As a
novel experiment being tried out for the first time in India, perhaps
even the scientific world, the YI meeting turned out to be an unreserved
success. If the attempt was to bring together the widely scattered
young investigator and post-doc pool of Indian scientists in one place
to create magic then I can say that magic happened.

What was
your overall impression of the meeting and its utility?

"The most distinct impression that I
had of the YIMeet-2009 was that it was
completely dedicated to solving the
problems faced by new faculty by suggesting ways of tackling common
problems through talks, panel discussions and informal chats with
established scientists. The meeting focussed on almost all issues,
ranging from how to identify research problems, to securing grants,
people management skills, administrative skills and most importantly
time management.
