About my work

I am interested in cell adhesion and primarily work in the area of tight junction biology. My laboratory focuses on the regulation of tight junction assembly and dis-assembly. Disruption of tight junctions is a common feature of diseases ranging from bacterial and viral infections to cancers. One of the approaches we use is to study the modulation of the tight junction by different pathogens and their effector proteins to gain insight into the signaling pathways that regulate the opening of tight junctions. This information is crucial to understand the processes of pathogenesis in greater detail and to identify new molecular targets which can be utilized to develop novel therapies. We are also interested in studying how tight junctions communicate to other epithelial junctions (adherens junctions) in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation.
